Alongside its role as a neutral forum, ITS Cyprus runs public-interest initiatives with open results. Road to Zero Cyprus turns open traffic data, road infrastructure profiling and Safe System principles into openly published evidence for reducing serious collisions.

Background
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) & EU Policy
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) use data and communications to manage traffic, inform travellers and make roads safer: traffic control centres, real-time travel information, connected vehicles and infrastructure (C-ITS), and the open data behind them. In the EU they are governed by the ITS Directive 2010/40/EU, revised by Directive (EU) 2023/2661, which requires Member States to make key traffic and travel data available in common formats through a National Access Point. ITS Cyprus follows this framework in its own work.
The Initiative: Road to Zero Cyprus
Road to Zero Cyprus is the flagship initiative of ITS Cyprus. It follows the Safe System approach behind the EU's Vision Zero goal, which starts from two facts: people make mistakes, and the human body can survive only limited crash forces. Roads, speeds and vehicles should therefore be designed so that a mistake does not cost a life. Road to Zero Cyprus applies this in Cyprus by recording serious collisions, reviewing where and how they happened, and publishing the evidence openly.
European ITS Landscape & Why Cyprus Needs ITS
Most EU countries have a national ITS association, part of the ITS Nationals network, where ministries, road authorities, universities and companies work together on standards and deployment. Cyprus does not yet have one. With C-ITS deployment, digital road infrastructure and the growth of its National Access Point still ahead, a shared forum helps avoid incompatible local systems, apply European standards consistently and base road safety policy on evidence.
Traffic4Cyprus & National Access Point
Traffic4Cyprus (traffic4cyprus.org.cy) is the official National Access Point (NAP) of the Republic of Cyprus, set up under the EU ITS Directive 2010/40/EU and its delegated regulations. It is the central register for national transport data and publishes real-time road events, congestion, weather hazards and public transport datasets in European open standards such as DATEX II. Traffic4Cyprus is operated by the Republic of Cyprus, not by ITS Cyprus; our Live Traffic & Network page shows some of its open data alongside other public sources.

George Christou is the National Standardization Delegate of Cyprus to CEN/TC 278 (Intelligent Transport Systems) and a transport systems specialist with over a decade of professional experience in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), GIS, and spatio-temporal big data analytics. He currently serves as a Manager at ERTICO – ITS Europe in Brussels. Previously, he was a Senior Research Engineer and Project Coordinator at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, where he led the technical development and national deployment of the Cyprus National Access Point (Traffic4Cyprus), the FixCyprus road hazard crowdsourcing platform, the Cyprus Digital Twin, and Cyprus's participation in NAPCORE. He has also worked as a Graduate Transport Consultant at Jacobs in London, where he was involved in strategic transport modelling for Transport for London (TfL) and in an asset management project for Network Rail. In Cyprus, he is a member of the Sustainable Mobility and Road Safety Committee of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK). George holds an MSc in Spatio-Temporal Analytics and Big Data Mining from University College London (UCL), an MBA from CIIM, and a BSc in Surveying & Geoinformatics Engineering from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).
