Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) integrate advanced telematics, Cooperative ITS (C-ITS), real-time traffic management, and data-driven infrastructure to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Our initiatives align with the European Union ITS Directive 2010/40/EU and the revised Directive (EU) 2023/2661, ensuring national transport networks interface seamlessly with European open data architectures and standardization specifications.
02 /The Initiative: Road to Zero Cyprus
Road to Zero Cyprus is an independent safety initiative founded on the Safe System framework (Vision Zero). The Safe System methodology asserts that road trauma is not an inevitable consequence of human mobility, but a preventable systemic failure. By acknowledging human physical vulnerability and cognitive limits, we design forgiving street networks—coupling safe travel speeds, proactive infrastructure improvements, and enhanced vulnerable road user (VRU) protections—to ensure that mistakes do not lead to loss of life.
03 /European ITS Landscape & Why Cyprus Needs ITS
Across Europe, National ITS Associations (the ITS Nationals network) serve as public-private catalysts uniting transport ministries, road authorities, academia, and industry. Cyprus is at a crucial turning point with smart motorways, urban C-ITS, and National Access Point expansion. A national ITS ecosystem is vital to avoid technological fragmentation, adopt European standards, and drive evidence-based road safety policy.
04 /Traffic4Cyprus & National Access Point
Traffic4Cyprus is the official National Access Point (NAP) portal of the Republic of Cyprus (traffic4cyprus.org.cy). Established in alignment with EU Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Directive 2010/40/EU and delegated regulations, the Cyprus NAP serves as the central register for national transport data. It hosts and disseminates real-time road safety events, traffic jams, weather hazards, and public transport datasets using European open standards like DATEX II. Road to Zero Cyprus integrates and visualizes these official streams to provide the public with clear, real-time spatial awareness of operational conditions.
George Christou
Founder, ITS Cyprus
George Christou is the National Standardization Delegate of Cyprus to CEN/TC 278 (Intelligent Transport Systems) and a transport systems specialist with over a decade of professional experience in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), GIS, and spatio-temporal big data analytics. He currently serves as a Manager at ERTICO – ITS Europe in Brussels, advancing smart, sustainable, and cooperative mobility initiatives across the continent. Previously, he was a Senior Research Engineer and Project Coordinator at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, where he led the technical development and national deployment of the Cyprus National Access Point (Traffic4Cyprus), the FixCyprus road hazard crowdsourcing platform, the Cyprus Digital Twin, and NAPCORE. He has also worked as a Graduate Transport Consultant at Jacobs in London, modeling smart motorway designs for Transport for London (TfL) and Network Rail. George holds an MSc in Spatio-Temporal Analytics and Big Data Mining from University College London (UCL), an MBA from CIIM, and a BSc in Surveying & Geoinformatics Engineering from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).

Live DATEX II Streams
Real-Time Traffic & Hazards: Live DATEX II feeds from the Cyprus National Access Point (traffic4cyprus.org.cy) and GNOSIS endpoints, providing instant collision and jam queues.
OpenStreetMap (OSM)
Street Infrastructure: Custom queries to the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database via the Overpass API, extracting sidewalk coverage, lighting, crossings, and speed limits near incident locations.
Language Accountability
Media Language Analysis: Algorithmic RSS monitoring of national news outlets, automatically grading collision reports against European Road Collision Reporting Guidelines.
Street-Level Imagery
Visual Validation: Street-level static imagery and metadata pulled from Google Street View and Mapillary APIs to verify physical road conditions.
Review Gate (Track B)
Review Gate Integrity: All automated incident profiles must pass a human review gate (Track B) to strip any living PII and verify the geocoded safety metrics before public release.
