Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

This website is run by ITS Cyprus, a non-profit association under establishment in the Republic of Cyprus, together with its initiatives such as Road to Zero Cyprus. This policy is prepared in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, Regulation (EU) 2016/679) and Cyprus Law 125(I)/2018. 2. What we collect when you visit

• Browsing: no account is needed. Our hosting provider keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and to keep the site running.
• Contact form: your name, email, request type, optionally a collision number, and your message. We use them only to reply to and handle your request, on the basis of the consent you give when you submit the form. We do not share them, use them for marketing or send them to AI services. We keep them only as long as we need to handle your request.
• Membership interest: when you email us, we use your details only to get back to you about joining ITS Cyprus.
• Preferences on your device: your cookie choice and light/dark theme are stored only in your browser. See the Cookie Policy.

3. Google Analytics

Google Analytics (Google Ireland Ltd) sets cookies and recognises returning visitors only if you accept it in the cookie notice. If you decline, your browser may still send Google a minimal signal with no cookies and no identifiers, used only for aggregate statistics. It gives us aggregate figures such as which pages are read, from which country and on what kind of device. You can change your choice at any time under “Cookie Settings” at the bottom of every page. Google may transfer data outside the EU under the safeguards described in its own privacy policy.

4. Maps and street imagery

• The interactive maps on the collisions directory and the Live Traffic page load directly from Google Maps. To show the map, Google receives your IP address and technical browser details.
• Maps on individual collision pages load tiles from OpenStreetMap, which also receives your IP address.
• Some collision pages show street-level imagery from Mapillary (Meta), loaded in your browser.
• Google Street View images on collision pages are fetched by our own server, so Google does not receive your IP address for them.

5. Collision records

• Records are based on official Cyprus Police announcements, which do not name living people involved in collisions. We keep the text of each announcement to locate and verify the collision.
• We never publish details of living people (drivers, passengers, pedestrians, witnesses).
• Our analyses look at the road and its infrastructure, not at anyone’s personal or legal blame. The Media Monitor assesses the language of published articles, not the journalists.

6. Use of AI

We use AI models from Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini) to process public information: classifying Police and local-authority announcements, translations, first drafts of Safe System analyses, assessing the language of news articles, and describing street imagery. We send the models only public announcements, published articles and street images — never visitor data or contact-form messages. Every record and analysis is reviewed by a person before it is published.

7. People who died in collisions

The GDPR protects living people; it does not cover people who have died. Out of respect, and to show the human cost of collisions, a record may name a person who was killed, under these rules:

• The name has already been made public in an official Cyprus Police announcement or by mainstream media.
• Names are found with the help of AI, and a person approves every name before it is published.
• Close family members can ask us at any time to remove or anonymise a name, through the Contact & Requests page. We give these requests priority and act on them as quickly as we can. This is our own commitment of respect, not a right under the GDPR.

8. Your rights

If we process data about you, you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and objection, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. Write to us at info@itscyprus.cy.
