Road to Zero Cyprus: Reframing Road Safety Through the Safe System
Welcome to the Road to Zero Cyprus initiative. This project is a dedicated effort by ITS Cyprus to build a comprehensive, data-driven platform designed to monitor, analyze, and prevent road traffic collisions across our national network.
The Safe System Approach
Traditional road safety paradigms often lay the entire burden of safety on the individual road user. The Safe System approach recognizes a different reality:
- Humans make mistakes: Our transport network must be designed to accommodate human fallibility.
- Humans are vulnerable: The physical limits of the human body to withstand kinetic impact energy must be the guiding constraint for speed limits and road designs.
- Shared responsibility: System designers, engineers, policy makers, and road users all share responsibility for safety.
Leveraging Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
To achieve our target of halving road deaths by 2030 and reaching zero by 2050, Cyprus must embrace smart infrastructure:
- Real-Time Data Integration: Ingesting and geocoding crash reports to identify patterns.
- Proactive Risk Profiling: Overlapping crash data with OpenStreetMap infrastructure layers to detect systematic safety gaps before crashes recur.
- Automated Public Dashboards: Raising awareness by presenting transparent, accessible metrics on national road safety.
Join us in advocating for safer streets, continuous sidewalks, physically separated cycle tracks, and traffic-calmed urban spaces.
