⚡ Safe Speeds: The map data records a 50 km/h limit on Spyrou Araouzou. That is well above what a person outside a vehicle can survive being struck at — the risk of death climbs steeply above about 30 km/h. This is a one-way street with two lanes, and in the October 2024 photographs it looks wide, smooth and free of oncoming traffic, which is exactly the layout that lets drivers drift faster than they intend. In a shopping and seafront street where the data records eight marked crossings within 150 m, a 30 km/h limit reinforced by design — raised crossings that work like a speed bump (speed tables), and narrowed lanes — would lower impact speeds and make a survivable outcome more likely.
🛣️ Safe Roads & Roadsides: The photographs show footways on both sides, a raised kerbed strip dividing the carriageway from a kerbside lane, and lines of bollards protecting the footway edge — good bones. The weaknesses are at the corners: in the view north, the side street meets the main road with a broad, open mouth and cars parked right up to the corner, which shortens how far a driver and a person stepping off the kerb can see each other. Tightening those corners so drivers must slow to turn (tight junction radii), carrying the footway straight across the side street at kerb height (continuous footways), and keeping the last few metres before each corner clear of parking would reduce the likelihood of turning conflicts.
